Whether you’re looking for the top Perth Instagram spots, or just need ideas for the best Perth photography locations… I’ve got you covered! From hidden natural gems in the Perth Hills to idyllic spots along the coast, plus everything in between. In this guide I share all my favourite and unique photo shoot locations in Perth.
I’ve been to all of these spots personally and have included my top photos from each to give you an idea of what to expect. This is the definitive list of Perth’s best photo spots.
Fremantle: Esplanade Park, High St and Surrounds
To kick off this list of Perth photo spots, we’ll head to the vibrant port town of Fremantle. Some might even argue that Fremantle is one of the coolest places in Perth. And with that, comes lots of Instagrammable spots in Fremantle!
Firstly, head to the Esplanade Park for photos with the red Ferris wheel. There is a lot of street art waiting to be found in Fremantle too, this mural is found in the carpark in between the ferris wheel and Bathers Beach House.
For some stunning photos (and a popular one for wedding photographers), make a beeline towards the beautiful heritage buildings found on High St in Fremantle and near the Round House.
However, don’t limit yourself to just one area. One of the things I love about Fremantle is strolling along the colourful streets and finding beautiful spots to photograph each time.
Go for an explore and who knows what else you might find.
Rainbow Containers, East Fremantle
One of my favourite places to take stand out photos in Perth is the Rainbow Containers in East Fremantle.
This Instagrammable location near the Fremantle Port is made of nine recycled sea containers by notable Perth artist, Marcus Canning. It’s an iconic Perth photo spot, especially with the Fremantle port cranes in the background!
Canola Fields, York
August is the time of the year that the canola begins to bloom near Perth. The fields of golden yellow are very Instagrammable and make a great spot for photos.
Take a day trip from Perth to the purpose planted canola field at Petteet Park in York where you can safely take as many photos in the canola fields as you desire!
Check out my detailed guide for all you need to know about visiting the canola fields near Perth. Please be mindful not to enter canola fields from the roadside, as they are private property.
Sunset Viewpoints in the Perth Hills: Zig Zag Scenic Drive & Lions Lookout
There are some great photography locations in the Perth Hills. In particular, the Perth Hills are a beautiful place in Perth to watch the sunset with city skyline views.
These photos are taken at the top of the Zig Zag Scenic Drive.
Lions Lookout is another great sunset spot in the Hills.
Fruit Orchards, Perth Hills
Picking your own fruit has become a popular activity at various orchards across the Perth Hills, as well as strawberry farms in the northern suburbs.
One of the more popular spots, Raeburn Orchards, has autumn and spring festivals that are popular for photoshoots (keep on scrolling to see my autumn photos below).
These photos below are from the picturesque Fruit Corner in Pickering Brook. Make a day of it and visit one of the Perth cider houses after for a drink and meal.
Make sure to follow the Facebook pages for up to date information on the best time to visit each season.
The general seasons for apple picking is May to June, and for strawberries from September to December.
Autumn Colours & Springtime in Perth
Come autumn, Perth’s orchards begin to turn into wonderful shades of orange and red hues.
Check out S&R Orchard and Raeburn Orchards in May for the autumn colours. Visit my in-depth guide for more autumn spots in Perth!
In September, you’ll find these places blossoming in shades of pink as the fruit trees begin to bloom. I haven’t made it there myself yet in springtime, but they attract visitors from all across Perth.
It’s one of the best places to take photos in Perth, come autumn or spring.
Blue Boat Shed, Crawley
The Blue Boat Shed is without a doubt one of the most instagrammable places in Perth.
This place is one of Perth’s most popular photoshoot locations. It is common to see a line of tourists waiting here to take their photo! Being a popular photography location in Perth, try to visit on weekdays or earlier in the day.
Go for a picturesque walk by the river along Matilda Bay, and grab a coffee at Bayside Kitchen after taking photos.
Bells Rapids
The Bells Rapid Waterfall used to be a well hidden secret photo spot in Perth.
When I visited in 2019, the location wasn’t even shared on Google Maps… I had to use Google Earth to try and find this spot! It’s a tough hike, so this is definitely one for the more determined and adventurous to seek out.
If you can find this spot, there is usually a rope swing at the base which makes for some cute photos.
A visit to Bells Rapids park is worthwhile regardless, it’s one of my favourite hiking spots near Perth and is also a great spot for a picnic.
Reabold Hill, City Beach
In the leafy green suburb of City Beach, you will find a great spot with a view across to the city skyline at Reabold Hill.
Head to the summit for a raised walkway with views to the city in one direction and the ocean in the other.
A popular spot for photographers in Perth, particularly on nights when the full moon rises over the city.
Yanchep Lagoon
Take a drive 45 minutes out of the city to the northern suburb of Yanchep. One of Perth’s best day trip locations, you can visit Yanchep National Park and see koalas and kangaroos.
Head to the coast to Yanchep Lagoon where the sparkling turquoise waters immediately catch your eye, and make for a great spot to have a dip!
Leederville Street Art
The inner city suburb of Leederville has some amazing street art that make for some of the best photo spots Perth.
Head to Oxford Street in Leederville for some cute photoshoot locations, and wander the street which is full of hip cafes, stylish boutiques and quirky stores.
The pink wall is located near Leederville Tafe and the mural of the lady with pink hair near 112 Oxford Street.
Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island is one of the most picturesque places in Perth.
Located only 30 minutes by ferry, it is my absolute number one recommended day trip to visitors to Perth. The beaches around Rottnest make for some perfect photoshoot locations with the aqua blue water.
Parker Point, Little Salmon Bay and the Basin are some of the most Instagrammable locations on Rottnest Island. And of course, we can’t forget about the famous #quokkaselfie!
Elizabeth Quay, Perth CBD
Elizabeth Quay is located in the middle of the Perth CBD and has a lot of different photoshoot locations. It’s one of my favourite spots for a variety of aesthetic places in Perth city.
The Elizabeth Quay carousel is very charming and makes for some great photos. You’ll also find the eye-catching Spanda sculpture nearby.
Walk out across the Elizabeth Quay Bridge for jaw-dropping photos with the city skyline in the background.
Swan Valley
The Swan Valley is only 25 minutes from the Perth CBD and is another great day trip from Perth. The vineyards will look best over the summer months when they are green.
Over winter they turn orange and lose their leaves… not quite as picturesque!
If you’ve got time during your visit to Perth, I highly recommend taking a road trip to the wine region of Margaret River.
Araluen Botanic Park
Araluen Botanic Park is a beautiful spot out in the Perth Hills, about 40 minutes from Perth CBD.
You’ll find over 59 hectares of gardens, ranging from natural bush, to forested gardens, a tulip festival in Spring and beautiful amber hued colours during autumn.
The Springtime Tulip Festival runs from mid-August to the end of September, and the Park becomes awash with brightly coloured tulips. Pack a picnic and make a day of in the Perth Hills.
The photos below were taken in May, during autumn and in September at the Tulip Festival.
Cottesloe Beach
One of the more eye-catching and unique Perth Instagram spots is found under the Indiana Tea House at Cottesloe Beach.
This iconic building is now home to the delightful Indigo Oscar restaurant and makes for some stunning photos.
Visit here at any time of the day for Instagrammable photos, but this is also an incredible sunrise and sunset spot.
Kings Park
Kings Park is another iconic Perth destination and not unsurprisingly, a popular Perth photoshoot location.
Head to Fraser Avenue for stunning views over Perth city and the Swan River.
The photo below with the orange flowers is taken near the War Memorial, the blooms change every few months.
During spring, the wildflowers bloom across Kings Park. My favourite spot is the eyepopping display of vibrant everlastings near Lovekin Dr.
South Perth Foreshore
The South Perth foreshore is another popular photography location in Perth.
Head across the river to see the city skyline along the foreshore. There is a little jetty here that you can walk out onto as well for some cute Instagram photos.
To get the compress city skyline effect in the photo below, I used my telephoto zoom lens. You can read all about the camera gear I use in my separate guide.
I’ve made the trip out here for sunrise twice, and it’s never disappointed.
Core Cider House, Bickley Valley
The Perth Hills has so many beautiful places to photograph.
Another favourite of mine is Core Cider House. Stop by for a cider tasting and lunch, and don’t forget to get some photos!
Check out the entrance way for the long row of trees and near the front entrance for this mural.
Mundaring Weir
Mundaring Weir is located in the Perth Hills, 45 minutes east of Perth.
The Weir itself is a great spot to get some photos, but for my insider tip head to the lookout platform located at Golden View Lookout.
You can walk here from across the Mundaring Weir, or drive to South Ledge (S Ledge Rd on Google Maps) and take a short walk to the Lookout.
This is also a super cute picnic spot in Perth!
Perth CBD
There are sooo many instagrammable spots hidden in the laneways of the Perth CBD. This colourful installation can be found within the 140 William precinct between Murray and Wellington St.
You’ll find some more colourful murals along Prince Lane and King St. Perth’s rooftop bars also make for some great photos – one of my favourites is the glitzy Songbird Bar at the top of the Ritz Carlton, and the Rooftop Bar at QT Perth hotel.
I highly recommend joining this Ultimate Perth Walking Tour with the knowledgeable guides from Oh Hey WA, as they help you discover Perth’s best street art and learn more about the secrets of the city.
London Court, Perth
Located in the Perth CBD, London Court is deserving of its own mention. This shopping arcade is straight out of an old English tale!
Visit it at any time of the year but keep an eye out for the seasonal displays around times like spring and Christmas (pictured).
Matagarup Bridge, East Perth
You will find a great photoshoot location in East Perth at the Matagarup Bridge.
The bridge crosses over the Swan River to the Perth Stadium. There are lots of different locations and perspectives to be captured here, so go for a wander and explore.
When you’re in need of some refreshments, stop by The Camfield pub or one of the many cafes located by the waters edge at Claisebrook Cove.
For thrill seekers, you can even go ziplining over Matagarup Bridge – check out my video from the experience here!
You can even join a guided behind-the-scenes tour of Optus Stadium.
Bonus Spot: At the end of 2024, a brand new bridge near Heirisson Island in East Perth has opened. The new Boorloo Bridge crosses the Swan River from Victoria Park, via Heirisson Island to Perth’s CBD at Point Fraser. From sunset, the bridge lights up with a colourful display from the 17,000+ LED lights built into the bridge.
Hyde Park, North Perth
This inner city park with two picturesque lakes is found in the inner city suburb Highgate.
I love going for a walk around the park, with a coffee stop at Chu Bakery afterwards.
Hyde Park is beautiful all year round but there are some great photo opportunities in autumn and during jacaranda season.
Omeo Shipwreck, Coogee Beach
A popular summer spot is the Omeo Shipwreck, located near Coogee Beach about 30 minutes south of Perth. This is a great snorkelling spot, with crystal clear water and marine life living in the remains of the wreck.
Head to the steps leading down into the water for some Instagrammable photos against the turquoise water.
Inner City Lakes: Herdsman Lake and Lake Monger
Two of my favourite inner suburban nature spots are Lake Monger and Herdsman Lake, both located in the suburb of Wembley, near Subiaco and Leederville.
Lake Monger has views of the Perth city skyline on one side, and a beautiful row of large pine trees on the other.
Herdsman Lake borders Osborne Park and Wembley. There are a series of board walks here that make for some lovely photos, particularly at sunset.
Jacaranda Season Across Perth
The purple blooming jacarandas make a great backdrop for perfect photos across Perth. The jacarandas can be found in a few suburbs around Perth, but Applecross is very popular for Instagram photos.
I’ve shared precise locations and more information about the best time to see the jacarandas in my detailed guide.
Pink Church, Subiaco
I came across this very cute pink church one day when visiting the nearby Subiaco Farmers Markets.
This is definitely one of the more secret photography spots Perth. I hadn’t seen any photos of it on Instagram when I took these photos in 2020.
You can find this pretty photo spot at the Earthwise Community Association at 315 Bagot Road, Subiaco.
Pink Flower Store, Cottesloe
Another cute pink building in Perth is this little flower shop in Cottesloe. When I last visited in 2020, the flower store was closed and was being used as an art gallery.
This has to one of Perth’s most Instagrammable locations, with the pink building, striped shade covers and creeping vine across the building. You can find this spot at 84 Forrest St, Cottesloe.
Update: Last time I drove past the pink has been painted over with a darker maroon colour. The building is still very cute though!
Lake Clifton Thrombolites
I debated whether to include this in this list of best photography spots Perth as it’s outside of suburban Perth. As it’s part of the Destination Perth tourism region, I’m counting it 🙂
Located 80 minutes south of Perth, the Lake Clifton Thrombolites are some of the world’s oldest living organisms!
Whilst they look pretty spectacular from the ground, this spot is best seen from the view of the drone above – I’ll let the pictures below do the talking!
Bonus: Giants of Mandurah (in Perth!)
The Giants of Mandurah is a larger-than-life display of Thomas Dambo’s giant sculptures, all crafted from recycled materials.
You’ll find them scattered around various locations near the seaside town of Mandurah, about 60 minutes south of Perth, but did you know there is a bonus “lost” giant hidden in Subiaco? He’s slightly smaller than his cousins down in Mandurah (pictured below), but it’s worth seeing if you’re in the area!
You’ll find it near the Subiaco Arts Centre. Here’s the exact location of the Lost Billy Bob Giant.
Final Thoughts
That wraps up this insiders guide on the best photo locations Perth has to offer.
