Jurien Bay Things to Do & Top Jurien Bay Attractions
Jurien Bay has a range of activities and attractions for beach lovers, families and adventure seekers alike. Here are the top things to do in Jurien Bay.
Explore the Pinnacles at Nambung National Park
Make sure to stop by the Pinnacles on your way from Perth, or make the 30 minute drive from town. Suitable for 2WD’s, you can drive through this unique National Park with its towering limestone pinnacles.
Pull in at the marked bays where you can get out and walk along the remarkable landscape.
Driving from Perth to Jurien Bay, you could also stop by Lancelin for morning tea and visit the unique shifting sands at Lancelin Sand Dunes
Alternatively, take the walking trail from the car park entrance and visit the lookouts over the desert. A national park entrance fee is payable per vehicle, and be sure to visit the Discovery Centre to learn about the history of this unusual natural attraction.
Swimming with Jurien Bay Sea Lions
One of the best activities in Jurien Bay is to go swimming with wild sea lions that live off an island near Jurien Bay. I took a tour with Turquoise Safaris in May 2021, and it was one of the highlights of our road trip along Australia’s Coral Coast.
There are usually two tours each day during peak season. I’d recommend the earliest one, when the wind is likely to be the lowest.
You’ll spend a few hours swimming and playing with the curious sea lions, who come straight up to the boat when they hear it arrive!
Turquoise Safaris were a great tour company, and made sure we knew how to safely interact with these puppies of the sea. Make sure you bring a gopro or underwater camera to get some snaps, or you can hire one in advance from Turquoise Safaris.
The sea lions are so playful, and you need to keep moving around in the water to keep them entertained, just like young kids!
Turquoise Safaris provide everything you need for your swim, including wet suits, fins and snorkel and masks (or you can bring your own).
Visit the Jurien Bay Jetty (old and new)
On the foreshore beachfront there are two jetties – the original jetty which is now in ruins, and a new jetty which is part of the redeveloped foreshore. There are BBQs and picnic tables, making the jetty the perfect sunset spot.
Skydive over Jurien Bay
Skydiving is a popular activity to do in Jurien Bay.
Skydive Jurien Bay offers a range of jumping options from solo and tandem jumps. You’ll get the best view possible of Jurien Bay and the surrounding islands! Coming back from our early morning sea lion tour, the sky was filled with colourful parachutes from the morning skydivers.
During wildflower season, make sure to visit Lesueur National Park. This wildflower hotspot is only 20 minutes out of Jurien Bay.
Enjoy Jurien Bay’s Many Beaches
Jurien Bay is part of the Jurien Bay Marine Park, with shallow and clear water perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
You can hire snorkel kits or paddle boards at Jurien Bay Adventure Tours. Near the end of the old jetty is the Jurien Bay Underwater Interpretive trail, a snorkel trail with an artificial reef placed on the ocean floor.
Go Fishing
At sunrise and sunset we saw many fishermen fishing off the jetty.
Fishing is allowed in most of the marine park, but check restrictions and catch limits before you go. There are companies that offer fishing tours and charters, such as Jurien Bay Oceanic or Turquoise Safaris.
Explore Sandy Cape
Things to do around Jurien Bay include a visit to Sandy Cape.
Sandy Cape is a beach camping area 15 minutes north of Jurien Bay. Visit as a day trip or camp overnight (no bookings, fills up quickly on weekends). It is 2WD accessible.
Enjoy the crystal clear water, hire a paddle board and make sure you visit the lookout on the top of the sand dune of the cape.
Hike the Turquoise Way Trail
The Turquoise Way Trail is a 14 kilometre track that extends from Jurien Bay to Hill River.
Navigate through the coastal landscape with scenic views as you walk, run or cycle all or part of the track. More information on the hike is available on TrailsWA.
