Entrance fees listed in this article are up to date as at June 2025.

Little Adam’s Peak, Ella

Little Adam’s Peak is a short and rewarding hike near Ella, Sri Lanka. Unlike its namesake, Adam’s Peak, this hike is a breeze, making it one of the best hiking trails in Sri Lanka.

Standing at a modest elevation of 1141 metres, you hike through a well-maintained path of gentle slopes and stairs, making it suitable for most fitness levels. It is just 1.5 kilometres one way, taking roughly 30 minutes to an hour.

The trailhead is marked on Google Maps as Little Adam’s Peak Trailhead, close to the Ravan Swim Club and Ella Swing. You can either arrange for a tuk-tuk the previous night to take you there in the morning or just drive your own tuk-tuk in Sri Lanka as I did!

Made it to Little Adam’s Peak

Little Adam’s Peak is often done as a sunrise hike. The breathtaking view of the sun rising behind rolling hills and valleys with seasonal waterfalls running down the slopes definitely makes it worth waking up at 4 am!

On a clear day, the majestic Ella Rock is also visible in the distance.

There is no entrance fee for this hike, and a guide is not needed as the route is fairly self-explanatory.

However, having maps.me or an offline Google Map downloaded on your phone is advised if you don’t have internet access (I used an AirAlo eSim to stay connected during my time in Sri Lanka which worked seamlessly across the country).

Ella Rock, Ella

Contributed by Katie and Tom from Trekking The Dream

Ella Rock is one of the most popular hikes in Sri Lanka. The hike offers unrivalled views across the Baddula Valley and Sri Lankan highlands as a reward for scaling its peak.

Located high on the hills above Ella Town, a hike to Ella Rock is a perfect trek for those staying locally. With a round-trip of approximately 12 km, it typically takes 3-4 hours to complete. Finding the trail can be challenging without a guide, and it is worth plotting the route before setting off. You can organise a guide in advance by booking online here, or enquire with your accommodation when you arrive in Ella.

You’ll ascend about 600m, and while most of the trail is not overly challenging, the final section up to the viewpoint is quite steep. The hike is considered moderate.

Departing from Ella railway station, turn left and walk along the tracks, heading south towards the forest trailhead below the Ella Rock viewpoint. While there isn’t a single defined route, once you have left the railway tracks, you will pass through a tea plantation. From there, head uphill through the woodland trails, passing several vistas.

You will come to a toll hut, where a small fee is charged for entry to the summit area, where the viewpoint opens up.

Views for days from the peak

The best time to hike Ella Rock is during the dry season, which typically runs from January to April. The weather is pleasant, and the views are usually clear. If you want to catch a spectacular sunrise or sunset, make sure you depart at least 2 hours beforehand and take a torch.

Also, remember to take water, wear comfortable footwear, and be mindful of approaching trains!

  • Entrance Fee: ~950 LKR (~ $3 USD)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Guide: Optional
  • Duration: 3 – 4 hours return

Just a quick reminder not to leave home without travel insurance! There’s nothing worse than getting unwell overseas, let alone worrying about whether you can afford to pay for treatment. I use Covermore when I travel, and they’ve been fantastic – from delayed flights in Kuala Lumpur to getting stuck on an island in the Philippines due to the weather, I’ve had no issues the few times I’ve needed to make a claim. Adam’s Peak, Dalhousie

Contributed by Sarah from A Social Nomad

Sri Pada, or Adam’s Peak, has been trekked on pilgrimages for more than 1,000 years as pilgrims come to see the Sri Pada – the sacred footprint left by the Buddha as he ascended to paradise.

This 3-hour (one-way) hike is traditionally started in the early hours of the morning, in the dark, to welcome sunrise at the top.  And while the rising sun may be masked by clouds, this Sri Lankan hike is a truly incredible experience.

Hiking the well-marked route is easy, even in the dark, as the way is marked by torches – and of course, the vendors who will sell you food, souvenirs, drinks, and encouragement along the way.

This is a tough trail as it’s mainly steps of varying sizes and shapes – making it an extremely good workout.  You’ll need to reserve enough energy for the return trip, which is the same way back down – the steps are particularly hard work going down, and take extra care if it rains, hiking poles are a boon in this situation!

Waiting for the sun to rise

In all, you should budget 6 hours for the Adam’s Peak hike, but as you’re probably starting at around 2.30 am to make it to the peak for sunrise, that will still leave you plenty of the day to explore the small village of Dalhousie where the hike starts from.

Guided sunrise hikes are available to book online, including transfers from Kandy to take the hassle out of experiencing an epic early morning adventure.

Take time at the peak to enjoy hot, sweet Ceylon Tea and a Sri Lankan breakfast. If you’re lucky enough to be there at sunrise, then you may also see the perfect shadow of Adam’s Peak cast onto the clouds.

Hanthana Mountain View Point, Kandy

Hiking Hanthana Mountain in Kandy offers an adventurous escape from the bustling city, rewarding hikers with stunning panoramic views.

There are several trails to reach the viewpoint. One option begins from the Ceylon Tea Museum and can be navigated without a guide. For the more adventurous, opt for the longer and more challenging 7 km trail that requires a guide (we used Blue Knuckles Travel). On this hike, you’ll hike through sections of dense jungle, tea plantations and fields of scented lemongrass.

Both hikes culminate in a short but steep ascent to the peak, which offers views of the Katusu Konda ridge and the city of Kandy nestled in the valley below.

Read about the two trail options in more detail in my dedicated guide here

Feeling on top of the world after making it to the peak

The best time to hike is around the dry season, from December to March. The risk of leeches is high on this trail, so take adequate protection such as wearing high socks and / or long pants and using insect repellent.

Our guide brought a spray bottle of Dettol solution, which was liberally applied to our feet as a leech deterrent! Watch my video on Instagram here.

Duwili Ella, Kandy

Contributed by Dotti from Explore Travel Oasis

The hike to Duwili Ella in the Knuckles Mountain Range is hands down, one of the best hikes in Sri Lanka.

Featuring three incredible waterfalls, including a natural infinity pool overlooking the jungle, this trek is an amazing adventure through some of Sri Lanka’s most pristine jungle scenery

As the trek goes through thick jungle, the best time to hike to Duwili Ella is during the dry season. The hike starts from Pitawala village, 57 km north of Kandy. From Kandy, you can either hire a tuk-tuk to take you to the village, or you can get there via public transportation. This will require two buses, changing in Matale.

The hike to Duwili Ella is an out-and-back trail of approximately 16 km each way.

It’s most commonly done over 2 days / 1 night. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and allows you to camp behind the third waterfall, which is one of the highlights of the trail.

Due to the steep and slippery terrain and the intense humidity, this hike is challenging and recommended for experienced hikers only. All hikes in the Knuckles Mountain Range Reserve require a guide. The trail is completely unmarked, with many river crossings, where it is easy to lose your way.

You can arrange a guide in advance in Kandy through a tour company, or if you have your own gear, directly in the village of Pitawala.

In addition to the guide’s fee, there is also an 800 LKR fee to enter the Knuckles Mountain Range Reserve.

  • Entrance Fee: ~ 800 LKR (~ $2.50 USD)
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Guide: Required
  • Duration: 2 days

Pidurangala Rock, Sigiriya

Hiking Pidurangala Rock in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka, offers an unforgettable experience, particularly if you start early to catch the sunrise. Located near the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Pidurangala is known for its unobstructed panoramic views of Sigiriya Rock and the surrounding countryside.

The hike begins at the ticket office, where you’ll pay an entrance fee of 1000 LKR.  The hike itself is relatively short, taking about 30-45 minutes to ascend the 200-metre-high rock.

While the hike is moderate in difficulty, it becomes steep and requires some rock climbing, especially in the final stretch. You’ll need a high level of mobility and proper footwear to tackle this (leave the flip-flops at home!).

The views of Sigiriya from the top of Pidurangala

Starting early in the morning is recommended to avoid the intense heat and to enjoy the spectacular sunrise views. Sunset is also a popular time to hike Pidurangala. The trail is mostly unlit, so bringing a flashlight is advisable (although we just used our phone light).

Facilities are non-existent on the trail, so come prepared with water, appropriate footwear, and mosquito spray. While the best time to hike is during the dry season, it can be hiked all year round but is not recommended in the rain due to the steep and slippery terrain.

  • Entrance Fee: 1000 LKR (~ $3.50 USD)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Guide: Not required
  • Duration: 1 hour return

Sigiriya Lion Rock, Sigiriya

Contributed by Shweta from Zest In A Tote

Climbing to the Ancient Fortress atop the Sigiriya Lion Rock is a highlight when exploring Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.

Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, is an ancient rock citadel. Climbing the 1200 stairs to the top of this towering rock column will reward you with incredible views of the plains below. However, the highlight of this hike is viewing the centuries-old remains of the ancient fortress that sat atop Sigiriya.

There are various stages of the climb to the peak, with some interesting sights to see along the way. The first part of the hike is relatively easy on a flat surface as you walk through the terraced gardens.

At the base of the fortress

At the midway point in your journey, you reach the giant carved lion claws in the rock that mark the beginning of the fortress. Here, you’ll begin to tackle the many stairs. A moderate level of fitness is required for this due to the sheer number of steps, although there are sections where you can stop and catch your breath.

A guide is not required but recommended if you’re interested to learn more about the history of the fortress and to make the experience more interesting.

  • Entrance Fee: $36 USD (payable in cash, USD or Sri Lankan Rupees equivalent)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Guide: Not required
  • Duration: 1 – 2 hours return
